De voetstappen achter haar in het donker waren gelukkig gestopt. Ze haalde opgelucht adem. Twee straten nog, dan was ze thuis. Plotseling sloten sterke handen zich om haar hals. Ze zag een kousevoet.

Tijdens haar dagelijkse wandeling door Rustig Belgisch Dorp lijken de bewoners vandaag spontaan te vallen zodra ze De Maakster zien. Dat kan natuurlijk toeval zijn. Het heeft niet gevroren, integendeel, het is zelfs warm voor de tijd van het jaar, maar de laatste restjes rottende bladeren op straat zijn door de regen van vannacht glibberig geworden.
Halverwege haar route, tussen de sportvelden aan de ene kant en het mountainbiketerrein aan de andere kant, ziet De Maakster in de verte een oudere man met zijn hond. During her daily walk through Quiet Belgian Village, the residents today seem to fall spontaneously as soon as they see The Maakster. That could of course be coincidental. It hasn’t frozen, on the contrary, it is actually quite warm for this time of year, but last night’s rain has made the remaining rotting leaves on the street slippery.
Halfway through her route, between the sports fields on one side and the mountain bike terrain on the other, The Maakster sees an elderly man with his dog in the distance. The man suddenly swings both his arms through the air and then falls slap on his behind. The dog, a blond labrador, looks at him in surprise. BG 43 – Sneeuw / Snow
Gehaakte Sneeuwballen. Crocheted Snowballs.
Er is deze week wat sneeuw gevallen. Er valt hier – in Nederland, waar ik vandaan kom, en België, waar ik woon – niet vaak sneeuw. Dus áls er dan eens een laagje sneeuw op straat ligt, bewegen we daar, te voet, op de fiets of in de auto, vrij onhandig overheen. Wel zijn we het er allemaal over eens dat vers gevallen sneeuw een prachtig gezicht is!
We had some snow this week. We don’t often get snow here – in the Netherlands, where I come from, and Belgium, where I live. So, if the streets are covered by a little layer of snow, we move over it, by foot, bike or car, quite awkwardly. But we all agree that freshly fallen snow is a beautiful sight!
BG 42 – Wiskundedeuk
Ze heeft een wiskundedeuk. Sterker nog: ze heeft een deuk voor alle exacte vakken. Dat zit zo. Ze heeft een broer die anderhalf jaar ouder is en die een wiskundeknobbel heeft, of eigenlijk een knobbel voor alle exacte vakken. Hij heeft natuurkunde met als specialisatie sterrenkunde gestudeerd. Dus toen zij geboren werd, was er niets meer over, enkel nog die deuk.
BG 42 – Mathematics Dent
She’s got a math dent. In fact, she’s got a dent for all science subjects. This is why. She has a brother who is a year and a half older and who has a math bump, or rather a bump for all science subjects. He studied physics with a specialization in astronomy. So, when she was born, there was nothing left, just that dent.
(A math bump, or wiskundeknobbel, is an actual word in Dutch. I made up the math dent.)

BG 39 – Keerpunt Traditie
Je zit aan het einde van het jaar vaak gezellig samen met de mensen die je dierbaar zijn (in dezelfde kamer, of via een online verbinding).
Maak je samenzijn dit jaar en de komende jaren speciaal door een nieuwe traditie te beginnen: de eindejaars Keerpunt Traditie.
Hoe werkt dat?
Tot drie keer toe neemt iedereen om de beurt het woord.
1. In de eerste ronde noem je die dingen die voor jou persoonlijk het minst leuk waren in het afgelopen jaar.
2. In de tweede ronde laat je het negatieve achter je en noem je die dingen die voor jou persoonlijk juist het leukst waren in het afgelopen jaar.
3. In de derde ronde noem je tot slot jouw wensen en plannen voor het komende jaar.
Natuurlijk hoef je niet alles te delen als je dat liever niet doet.
De Keerpunt Traditie is geen verplichting, maar een liefdevolle uitnodiging.

At the end of the year, you often sit together with the people that are dear to you (in the same room, or via an online connection).
Make your get-together this year and the coming years special by starting a new tradition: the end-of-year Turning Point Tradition.
How does that work?
Everyone takes three turns to speak.
1. In the first round, you share those things that were the most negative for you personally in the past year.
2. In the second round, you leave the negative behind and share those things that have been the most positive for you personally in the past year.
3. Finally, in the third round, you share your wishes and plans for the coming year.
Of course you don’t have to share everything if you prefer not to.
The Turning Point Tradition is not an obligation, but a loving invitation.
