Van de vier stoelen die er gewoonlijk rond de keukentafel stonden, miste er vanmorgen een. Dat was vreemd. Terwijl ze samen met haar broer rondkeek op zoek naar de stoel, vond ze op de keukentafel een briefje van hun moeder. Dat was nog vreemder. Moeder had geschreven dat ze de hele dag weg zou zijn en pas laat thuis zou komen, dat ze niet ongerust moesten zijn.

Er zitten vaak twee eksters in onze tuin. Ik denk tenminste dat het eksters zijn, ik heb niet veel verstand van vogelsoorten. We hebben ook twee katten, dat komt goed uit, één voor elke ekster. Al vanaf dat de katten klein waren, vier jaar geleden, komen de eksters hen regelmatig treiteren. Ze wachten op de rand van het garagedak tot ze een ideale kans zien om laag over de koppen van de katten heen te scheren om ze flink te doen schrikken. Het werkt elke keer. Zeker bij onze kater Leo, die niet erg heldhaftig is. Zijn zusje Daisy ondergaat het meer stoïcijns. Of het steeds dezelfde twee eksters zijn valt nog te bezien. Ken jij eksters uit elkaar? Ik ook niet. Misschien dat ze de traditie steeds aan een nieuw stel doorgeven. Hoe dan ook, al vier jaar lang laten een paar eksters onze katten steeds opnieuw schrikken en Leo trapt er nog elke keer in.
Two magpies often visit our garden. At least I think they are magpies, I don’t know much about bird species. We also have two cats, which is convenient, one for each magpie. Since the cats were small, four years ago, the magpies have been harassing them regularly. They wait on the edge of the garage roof until they see an ideal opportunity to fly low over the heads of the cats to scare them. It works every single time. Especially with our tomcat Leo, who is not very heroic. His sister Daisy is more stoic. Whether they are always the same two magpies remains to be seen. Do you know magpies apart? Me neither. Maybe they keep passing the tradition on to a new couple. Anyway, for four years some magpies have been scaring our cats over and over again and Leo still falls for it every single time.

Mijn handen zijn me dierbaar.
Ik gebruik ze hele dagen door, voor van alles en nog wat. Bij voorkeur voor creatieve projecten, voor het strelen van mijn lief, of voor het vasthouden van een boek dat ik lees.
Mijn vingers zijn slank en bleek en moeten regelmatig met handcrème ingesmeerd worden, tegen uitdroging. Ik hou mijn nagels netjes en de uitstekende randjes mooi wit, en ik probeer niet te vaak te peuteren aan de losse velletjes rondom.
Al mijn tien vingers zijn nog intact. Dat kan niet iedereen van mijn leeftijd zeggen. Iets om trots op te zijn dus. Het leven heeft er wel wat littekens op achtergelaten, maar dat geeft ze karakter.
Ik word er wel eens van beschuldigd piano-vingers te hebben, maar ik speel geen piano.
Zelf omschrijf ik ze liever als gitaar-vingers. Ik speel ook geen gitaar.
My hands are precious to me.
I use them all day long, for anything and everything. Preferably for creative projects, for caressing my love, or for holding a book I read.
My fingers are slender and pale and have to be rubbed with hand cream regularly to prevent dehydration. I keep my nails neat and the protruding edges nice and white, and I try not to fiddle with the loose pieces of skin around them too often.
All of my ten fingers are still intact. Not everyone my age can say that. So that’s something to be proud of. Life has left some scars on them, but that gives them character.
I have been accused of having piano fingers, but I don’t play the piano.
I prefer to describe them as guitar fingers. I don’t play the guitar either.
Is het leven leuk? Natuurlijk! Dat beslis je zelf.
Jij beslist waarnaar je kijkt en luistert, jij beslist waar je je aandacht op richt.
Heb ik alle antwoorden? Welnee – ik rommel ook maar wat aan.
Maar dit weet ik wel: wie zich uitleeft in creativiteit heeft geen ruimte voor doemdenkerij.
